Dr Tony Attwood: Clinical Psychologist, world-renowned expert on aspergers syndrome, author

Tony Attwood is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism spectrum disorders since he qualified as a clinical psychologist in England in 1975. He works in private practice in Brisbane but is also an adjunct Associate Professor at Griffith University in Queensland.

Tony has written several publications on Aspergers Syndrome. His book, Aspergers Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, has sold over 300,000 copies and has been translated into 20 different languages.

Tony has worked with over 3,000 individuals of all ages with an autism spectrum disorder. He presents workshops and runs training courses for parents, professionals and individuals with an autism spectrum disorder all over the world and is a prolific author of scientific papers and books on the subject. His new book The Complete Guide to Aspergers Syndrome was published in October 2006. His presentations are informative and empowering.

Dr Michelle Garnett is a Clinical Psychologist and Founder and Director of "Minds & Hearts", a psychology clinic based in Brisbane that provides services specifically for Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and related conditions. Michelle has specialised in autism spectum disorders (ASD) for over 20 years, developing expertise in all sub types of autism across all ages. She obtained a PhD for her research on ASD in 2007 from the University of Queensland, Australia. Since then she has co-authored four books on ASD (including three with Dr Tony Attwood), and a number of peer reviewed journal articles. She provides training in ASD for postgraduate clinical students for four Australian Universities. Presenting alongside Tony Attwood these two presenters are a dynamic team.

Course Content:

Cognitive Abilities: A Different Way of Thinking and Learning: The unusual profile of cognitive abilities associated with autism spectrum disorder is described with an emphasis on the profile of intellectual abilities, problems with executive function, flexible thinking, coping with mistakes and weak central coherence. Strategies are described to improve motivation, organisation skills and academic achievement. Includes new content on Special Interests.

Managing Challenging Behaviour in Children with Autism: Provides an explanation and strategies for repetitive behaviour, emotion management, development of effective communication systems, self-injurious behaviour, improving social understanding and coping with change. Includes new content on strategies to improve social understanding and friendship skills.


Who should attend?

Anyone caring, living or working with someone with an autism spectrum disorder e.g. Teachers, Teacher Aides, SENCOs, School Principals, Counsellors, RTLBs, SLTs, OTs, PTs, GSE Staff, Psychologists, Paediatricians, other Service Providers and Families.
